You stand up and take a deep breath. Mom can fly off the handle, but she always tells it straight. Before you leave your room, you tuck the acceptance letter into the “Algebra II” binder in your backpack. You don’t think mom would tear up the letter if she found it, but something warns you not to take that risk.
Mom is folding the laundry and listening to something on her headphones; an audiobook, judging by the tinny narrator’s voice coming to you. She looks over you and smiles.
“Hi, honey. What’s going on?”
“Mom, I have to ask you something…”
