Dad’s muttering to himself while reading a thick book called Mages, Mystics, and Mirrors. Sounds about right for him. When he looks up, his stare of intense concentration changes into a warm smile. He stands up, walks to you, and pulls you into a hug.
“I understand now,” he says, instead of a normal greeting. “We exist, you and I and everybody we know, but we also exist as characters in a story in another dimension. And the characters we read about? They really exist somewhere, even if we can’t meet them. Stories are bridges between their worlds and ours. Maybe even two-way bridges, who knows?”
“That’s…interesting, dad,” you say, but you can’t hide your smile. Dad might be off-the-wall, but he always brings a very dad perspective to everything.
“What’s on your mind?” he asks. He looks at the packet in your hand and gestures. “Could I see it?”
The conversation continues in Gifted: Chapter Two. By the time you finish reading this, it should already be in your inbox.
